Early this year, Parliament will consider a new Member’s Bill that would offer employers more protections to negotiate the exit of an employee.

ACT MP Laura McClure’s Employment Relations (Termination of Employment by Agreement) Amendment Bill would allow employers and employees to negotiate an exit and settlement package without the risk of a personal grievance.

So-called “golden handshake” deals are currently possible in limited circumstances, but only via a “without prejudice” discussion after a serious employment problem is identified.

As a Member’s Bill, it isn’t guaranteed to be supported by the Government and would need the support of a majority of MPs to pass.
