Businesses for Climate Action Trust / Mission Zero

Mission Zero is a Nelson Tasman-based charitable organisation dedicated to reducing carbon emissions and empowering the community to take practical climate action. In 2024, with funding from Nelson City Council, Mission Zero launched the Low-Carbon Commute Initiative, targeting the region’s largest source of emissions — transport, which accounts for 60% of Nelson’s greenhouse gases. The initiative quickly exceeded expectations, engaging nine major employers and one school, representing over 3,200 employees — 10% of the region’s workforce. Through surveys, focus groups, and a dedicated hackathon, Mission Zero worked with businesses to identify barriers such as limited public transport, high e-bikes costs, and safety concerns for cyclists. Practical solutions included flexible working hours, car-pooling initiatives, workplace charging facilities, and the introduction of salary-sacrifice e-bike purchase schemes. A highlight of the project was the establishment of the CEO Forum, in which business leaders committed to embedding low-carbon commuting into workplace culture. The initiative also laid the groundwork for the Swap One campaign, encouraging individuals to swap one high-carbon commute per week for a sustainable alternative, and the Neighbourgood initiative, focused on commuter safety. Mission Zero continues to demonstrate how collaborative community action can achieve meaningful, measurable progress towards a healthier, low-carbon future for Nelson Tasman.
