Findex BA5: Hosted by NBS, in collaboration with Tasman Rugby Union

This month’s Findex Business After 5 is proudly hosted by NBS, the South Island’s oldest building society, in collaboration with Tasman Rugby Union (TRU).

NBS has been providing personal, business and community banking services to local people throughout the South Island of New Zealand for over 160 years. With more than 20,000 clients, they offer full banking services including transactional and savings accounts, term investments, home and business loans. Their people take pride in knowing their clients by name and use local knowledge to make timely decisions.

As a mutual building society, NBS is locally owned by its clients. This model allows the organisation to think differently about its profits and to provide meaningful, financial support to the community through sponsorships and grants to hundreds of sporting, arts, health, educational, and environmental organisations. Over the last three years, NBS has invested $3.6 million back into the community.  NBS is not a registered bank.

TRU may be New Zealand’s newest provincial rugby union, formed in 2005, but it carries a proud legacy. Created through the amalgamation of the Nelson Bays and Marlborough Unions, TRU unites more than a century of rugby history. Marlborough, founded in 1888 and remembered as the “Red Devils,” famously held the Ranfurly Shield for six defences in the 1970s. Nelson Bays, known as the “Griffins,” was established in 1968, with Nelson Rugby itself dating back to 1885 as the nation’s sixth provincial union—and the home of New Zealand’s very first competitive rugby match in 1870 at The Botanics.

Today, TRU’s charter is simple: the game comes first. The Union supports 220 teams across 33 schools and clubs, representing more than 6,000 players and 50 referees, all supported by a dedicated team based in Nelson and Blenheim. Rugby remains the region’s leading team sport.
