Most business owners aren't stuck because they lack effort. They're stuck because they lack clarity and structure. Coachbirds exists to fix that, helping service-based business owners escape the constant firefighting and unpredictable growth that comes with running a business alone, to build something that doesn't rely on them every day. Founded by Mitchell Wilson, who brings more than twenty years of experience across finance, real estate and fitness, Coachbirds works online with clients throughout New Zealand and Australia. Its BOSS System, built around Sales, Systems and Strategy, gives business owners a clear, structured path forward instead of a scattered mix of tactics and advice. The team behind Coachbirds is direct and results-driven, but genuinely invested in every client's success, backed by a wider goal of helping small and medium businesses collectively reach a billion dollars in sales. Coachbirds' message to business owners is simple: you don't have to do this alone anymore. Coachbirds helps good people build great businesses and get their freedom back.

Common Threads is a natural fibre fabric and yarn shop in the heart of Nelson CBD, in Bridge Street Studios. Founded and run by Lisa Dunker, it opened on 28 March 2026 to give good materials a second chance and to bring Nelson’s makers back together. Everything Common Threads sells is unused: deadstock, mill ends and destash from mills, dyers, makers, private stashes, estate sales and shop closures, including AURA Eclipse, an exclusive NZ-made alpaca/merino yarn from Cruella’s, a Nelson yarn store that closed. Quality, ethics and rarity guide every purchase, and only natural fibres are stocked. Common Threads champions slow making over fast fashion. Its weekly Saturday stitch club, Fibre Tribe, welcomes makers of every age, skill and fibre art, and its workshops include school holiday programmes for ages 8 to 12, knitting and crochet, darning, leather-work and hat-making. In August 2026 it launched a national online store, so makers across New Zealand can now shop its rare stock.

Hākinakina is a Nelson-based swimwear brand making UPF 50+ cover-up swimwear for active women who want to get back in the water. Founder Sara started the business in 2020, after cancer treatment left her needing sun protection and swimwear that covered her changing body. She couldn’t find anything that protected her skin and made her feel good, so she made it herself. Today, after five years living with stage 4 cancer, Sara still swims, paddles and kayaks most days. The water is the essence of the business. It drives everything Hākinakina makes: swimwear that gives women in their 40s to 70s the confidence, comfort and style to keep getting in the water. Hākinakina’s rash tops, swim shorts and swimsuits are made from recycled fabric with UPF 50+ sun protection built in. Every piece is cut and sewn in small batches by independent New Zealand makers, in prints Sara designs herself. Hākinakina means to play sport and enjoy oneself. Its mission is to give women the water back. The brand sells to women across New Zealand, Australia, the US, Canada and beyond.

From a nine-meal freezer in a small Nelson café to 63 retail outlets, My Kitchen Table has grown rapidly without losing sight of what matters: making proper food and genuinely looking after people. Founders and producers Ian and Pam White launched My Kitchen Table in September 2024, drawing on more than 40 years of working together in food and hospitality. Every meal is made from scratch in their Nelson kitchen, using traditional recipes, carefully selected New Zealand ingredients and regional produce wherever possible. “We are not trying to make factory food appear homemade,” says Ian. “We are building a trusted local food business where the founders remain accountable for what goes into every meal and how every customer is treated.” That commitment extends beyond the kitchen. My Kitchen Table offers free local delivery, supports customers who struggle with online ordering and works directly with supermarkets to provide a credible alternative to low-value frozen meals and expensive takeaways. Entering Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce Small Business Award represents an opportunity to recognise the people, partnerships and community that have supported the journey—and to demonstrate that meaningful growth can still be built around care and integrity - "Where every meal feels like home".

Adam Bone (ABM)

Adam Bone is a 19-year-old entrepreneur and the founder of ABM, an Auckland-based content partner agency working with businesses across New Zealand. Adam has always been hardworking and driven, with clearly defined goals and a burning pursuit for more. He grew up in Nelson and is a proud Nelson College old boy. His first company placed second nationally in Young Enterprise along with a national innovation award, and he exited it at the start of 2026. Today ABM runs monthly content for brands and has worked with clients such as Wireless Nation, University of Auckland, Outdoor Action and many more. Adam plans to scale and then exit, while still working with clients in his hometown of Nelson. He is also building The Build Collective, a community for young Kiwi entrepreneurs.

Danielle Eagle (Danielle Creative)

Danielle Eagle is a Nelson-based photographer, videographer and the creative behind Danielle Creative. She first picked up a camera in 2018 at 16, and she’s had one glued to her hand ever since. After several years working alongside Nelson creatives, Danielle took the leap to work for herself, launching Danielle Creative in 2023. Since then she’s built a diverse photography and videography portfolio, working with businesses all over the Nelson region. Since 2024 Danielle has worked with the Nelson Giants Basketball team across content creation, social media and marketing. Through her work with the Giants, she has expanded her creative skillset, met some incredible people, and learnt how special it is to be part of an organisation with such a strong history and connection to the Nelson community. Danielle is involved in her local church, using her creative skills to contribute behind the scenes. Being part of something bigger than herself is important to her, and it’s especially fitting, as church is where her creative journey began as a teenager. She enjoys the variety of a creative career and the opportunity to keep learning, while using her skills to tell stories and contribute to whatever environment she finds herself in.

Fabien Brocklesby (Light Lane Limited)

Fabien Brocklesby is the 18-year-old founder of Light Lane, a New Zealand company that builds its own industrial laser machines, handhelds, electronics and software in-house. With a beam as fine as a hair, its lasers burn permanent brands, barcodes and traceability codes into almost anything: timber racing down production lines, frozen product at minus 130°C, even posts hot off the line. It's cleaner too: no ink, solvents or label waste, just electricity. The marks can't smudge or peel off, so exports aren't rejected, and each code traces a product back to where and when it was made. Based in Nelson and Christchurch, Light Lane works with timber, engineering, seafood and marine manufacturers nationwide and is preparing to expand overseas. Fabien wrote his first code at six and has been starting businesses ever since, finishing school at 16 to work as a software engineer. His venture Tail Tags laser engraved QR codes onto smart pet tags. Frustrated by existing laser software, he wrote his own in 2025, then pivoted to industrial laser systems in May 2026. Light Lane's purpose: every product made, anywhere in the world, should carry a mark that lasts as long as the product does.

Milo Coldren (UC Marketing Society)

Milo Coldren is a final-year Commerce student at the University of Canterbury, double-majoring in Marketing and Strategy & Entrepreneurship. Having grown up in Nelson, he moved to Christchurch for university and co-founded the UC Marketing Society (UCMS), a student-run society that connects marketing students with industry through events, panels and challenges. He co-founded UCMS alongside Rore Morgan in late 2025 after seeing that marketing students had few opportunities to build industry connections and skills outside the classroom. In its first year, UCMS has grown to more than 750 members, run 13 events and partnered with organisations such as ZURU, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare and the NZ Marketing Association, to name a few. The society has helped more than 20 students into internships and jobs, and has set the 13-person executive team for 2027 to continue growing. Alongside UCMS and his studies, Milo does freelance work for small businesses needing help with strategy, advertising, websites, and AI systems. Upon graduating in November, he will join ZURU as an intern in the commercial team in Auckland.

Rore Morgan (Young Kiwis in Marketing)

Rore Morgan grew up in Nelson and is now studying at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, where he is building three marketing ventures alongside his degree. In 2026 he started RM Creative, a social media agency that works with small and medium businesses on strategy, content and channel management. He co-founded the UC Marketing Society (UCMS) to give students a better way into the industry. More than 250 students came to the launch night. In its first year the society grew to 800 members, drew more than 1,000 students to its events and helped over 30 of them into marketing jobs. Rore is co-president, and he also sits on the New Zealand Marketing Association's Southern Committee. His next project is Young Kiwis in Marketing, a network for marketers under 30 launching in April 2027. It will run events in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin for students, early career marketers, business owners and young leaders, with a national conference planned for 2028. Behind all three is the same idea. Rore saw talented young people struggling to get a foot in the door, and small businesses that needed help getting noticed, and wanted to help both.
