Westpac Smarts: Johny O'Donnell from Kopu

  • Wednesday 28 October 2026
  • 10:45 am - 12:00 pm
  • Tides Hotel, 66 Trafalgar Street, Nelson, 7010, New Zealand

Join us for an engaging session with Johny O’Donnell from Kōpū, as we hear more about the vision behind Kōpū and the work underway to help shape the future of Whakatū Nelson.

Kōpū is being driven by the eight iwi of Te Tauihu as a collective approach to increasing the visibility and presence of toi Māori across Whakatū. Its work brings together art, design, storytelling and place, with a focus on ensuring our shared spaces better reflect the identity, history and people of our region.

Johny will share the story behind Kōpū, some of the projects already taking shape across the city, and the thinking behind creating spaces that carry greater cultural meaning and connection. Current projects include the Bridge to Better city revitalisation, Playspace Whakatū and the significant waka installation at Nelson Airport.

It will be a great opportunity to hear first-hand about the kaupapa, the collaboration involved, and what this work could mean for the future look, feel and identity of Whakatū.

Come along, hear the story and join the conversation about how design, culture and community can help shape a city that truly reflects the place we call home.
